Nouméa: commercial shipping and cruise arrivals
Nouméa’s port is divided between the older Petite Rade waterfront and the larger commercial facilities of Grande Rade. These connected harbour areas serve different parts of the city’s maritime economy, from passenger arrivals to the movement of containerised goods.
Grande Rade accommodates merchant shipping and container handling. Petite Rade fronts the town and contains older port facilities, giving the harbour a direct relationship with the urban waterfront. Île Nou separates the two roadsteads, which also have a connection for smaller craft.
Cruise calls bring visitors to Nouméa alongside its freight activity. The distinction between the two harbour areas helps explain why passenger and commercial vessels may use different locations within the same port, rather than a single central quay.
