Port Vila
Port Vila’s harbour supports the capital’s overseas trade and maritime links with other islands. Set on the eastern side of Mele Bay, it brings cargo and passenger activity close to the urban centre on Efate. Its sheltered setting has made the waterfront an important focus for the city’s development.
The port includes the main wharf and the separate Lapetasi cargo facility. Lapetasi handles international shipping, including cargo vessels and tankers, while the wider port system connects the capital with domestic island traffic. These functions support the movement of supplies into a dispersed island economy.
Cruise visits give the harbour a further passenger role. Cargo operations and tourism depend on different waterfront facilities, but both connect Port Vila with activity beyond the city, from inter-island journeys to international maritime routes.
