Chizhou: the shift from historic wharves to modern cargo terminals
Chizhou’s older waterfront at Chikou belongs to a river port system that has changed as cargo activity developed elsewhere along the Yangtze. The city’s port name covers several areas, including historic harbour sites and separate modern commercial terminals.
The former No. 10 wharf in the old Chikou area closed in early 2009. A municipal commerce bureau account published in 2022 identified Jiangkou as the location of the port’s internationally open bulk and general cargo berths, marking a shift away from the older landing area.
Planning documents also distinguished tourist and support-service wharves in the old harbour from larger industrial cargo areas. Chikou’s history is therefore part of a broader reorganisation of the city’s river frontage, with modern freight handling concentrated at other designated terminals.
