Tanto Intim Line is an Indonesian shipping and logistics company founded in 1971 and headquartered in Surabaya, East Java. From its beginnings as a modest family-owned operator, the company has grown into a recognised regional maritime service provider with decades of involvement in container transport and freight logistics.
Over more than 50 years, Tanto has built an active presence in Indonesia’s coastal and inter-island shipping market. The company’s fleet comprises more than 50 modern container vessels with a combined capacity of about 26,000 TEU, handling cargo movements along domestic routes as well as selected regional sea corridors.
In addition to vessel operations, Tanto maintains a sizeable inventory of container equipment, including more than 50,000 ISO containers of various sizes and types, regularly deployed to meet diverse cargo needs. Its container yards and handlers use certified heavy equipment — such as reach stackers and forklifts — to support efficient loading and unloading.
The company’s services have evolved with both market demand and technology. In the early 1990s, Tanto was among the first to ship containers to destinations such as Bitung, demonstrating an early willingness to expand into emerging Indonesian markets.
Tanto’s operational footprint covers a wide array of domestic routes connecting major Indonesian ports such as Surabaya, Jakarta, Balikpapan, Makassar, Jayapura and Ambon, with multiple departures each month on many lanes. These schedules reflect its role in linking distant islands and supporting domestic trade flows across the archipelago.
An interesting aspect of the company is its longevity: operating continuously since the early 1970s, Tanto has sustained market relevance in a competitive environment dominated by larger international carriers and freight integrators. Its service focus on both established and underserved Indonesian ports marks it as a key player in internal maritime connectivity.
