Founded in 1965, Wan Hai Lines began as a log-shipping company operating between Taiwan, Japan, and Southeast Asia. Recognizing the rising trend of containerization, the company made a strategic pivot in 1976, acquiring its first full-container vessel, MV Ming Chun, to launch container shipping services between Taiwan and Japan. Since then, Wan Hai has transformed into a fully containerized global shipping company renowned for its high-frequency schedules and reliability across Asia and beyond.

Wan Hai operates approximately 142 vessels with a total capacity of around 430,854 TEU, ranking among the top container carriers globally. The company serves routes throughout East Asia, extending to North America, South America, Africa, the Middle East, and beyond. Its expansive network includes 33 countries, with dense intra-Asia services and growing trans-Pacific links. With exclusive terminals and depots in key Taiwanese ports like Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Taipei, Wan Hai remains the only Taiwanese carrier with such extensive terminal access across the island. The company is also expanding its fleet capabilities: as of 2025, it has 32 new vessels on order, including 12 ultra-large 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel or methanol-ready ships, and 20 vessels of 8,000 TEU, slated for delivery through 2028.
