Aden port: containers within a wider trading harbour
Aden’s container business forms part of a much broader working harbour. Its natural harbour has inner and outer areas, with facilities serving different cargo trades. Aden Container Terminal, opened in 1999, was developed to handle both domestic shipments and containers transferred between ships.
That second activity, known as transshipment, makes the terminal a point of connection between sea services. Cargo can change vessels there before continuing to its destination, while domestic shipments pass between the terminal and the local transport network.
Elsewhere in the port, Ma’alla’s facilities accommodate a varied cargo mix that includes grain, cement and clinker. Understanding Aden therefore means distinguishing the dedicated container terminal from the other cargo facilities within the harbour, each with its own commercial role.
