Mokha: a historic trading port on the Red Sea
Mokha is associated with the coffee trade that once connected inland producers with overseas buyers. Its coastal position near the southern end of the Red Sea gave it a place in regional commerce, and the port’s name became widely linked with that export history.
The modern harbour layout includes a projecting jetty protected on its western side by a breakwater. Published port descriptions identify cargo berthing and space for coastal vessels, distinguishing the developed waterfront from the open roadstead outside it.
Mokha’s maritime importance combines this trading heritage with its position near routes leading towards Bab el-Mandeb. Current operating conditions remain affected by conflict, so the presence of physical port infrastructure should not be read as confirmation that particular cargo services or access arrangements are available.
