Long Beach port: container trade on San Pedro Bay
Long Beach is a major container gateway on San Pedro Bay, where cargo terminals connect ocean shipping with inland distribution. It shares the bay with the separately administered Port of Los Angeles. Terminal Island and the surrounding harbour basins accommodate much of the working waterfront.
Container terminals include Long Beach Container Terminal, while specialised facilities handle cargo such as petroleum, vehicles and building materials. This range makes the port important both to retailers receiving manufactured goods and to industries moving products outside standard shipping containers.
Rail facilities at the docks allow containers to move between vessels and inland trains. Alongside truck access, they extend the port’s reach beyond the surrounding metropolitan area. The harbour also accommodates a cruise terminal near the Queen Mary, adding passenger traffic to a waterfront dominated by trade.
