Kodiak: fishing, freight and passenger transport at an island port
Kodiak combines commercial fishing, cargo handling and passenger transport within a working island waterfront. Its municipal port includes three main piers, while St Paul Harbor and St Herman Harbor provide separate sheltered moorings for smaller vessels.
Pier I accommodates ferry traffic and a bulk fuel facility. Pier II, known as the Fisherman’s Terminal, has a mixed role that includes commercial freight, cruise calls and fishing vessel activity. Pier III is the cargo terminal, with a container crane and storage yard alongside facilities for general cargo.
The two smaller harbours support the fishing fleet and other local boats, with inner docks used for loading gear and vessel repairs. This combination gives Kodiak both an outward connection for maritime trade and a practical base for the vessels working surrounding waters.
