Port of Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung combines container shipping with the movement of industrial raw materials through an extensive harbour on the Taiwan Strait. Container terminals share the port system with quays for general cargo, dry bulk, chemicals and liquid cargo, giving it a broader role than the transfer of boxed freight alone.

The harbour has northern and southern entrances leading into a connected system of commercial basins. Its waterfront is divided into working areas, with specialised berths separating cargoes that require different handling equipment and storage arrangements.

This layout serves the industrial economy around Kaohsiung as well as overseas trade. Container operations provide an outlet for manufactured goods, while the bulk and liquid facilities link maritime transport with the material needs of the surrounding industrial district. The port’s character reflects these parallel functions across a long, developed waterfront.
