Chabahar port: cargo infrastructure with a regional ambition
Chabahar’s significance extends beyond the cargo worked at its quays. The port has been developed as a potential gateway for trade with Afghanistan and Central Asia, giving its infrastructure a place in wider discussions about regional transport connections.
Its two main terminal areas, Shahid Beheshti and Shahid Kalantari, accommodate different cargo activities. Sailing Directions lists facilities for containers and general cargo, alongside commodities such as grain and fertiliser. These are the physical foundations beneath the port’s broader strategic profile.
In May 2024, India Ports Global and the Ports and Maritime Organization signed a long-term contract for Shahid Beheshti’s development. That agreement illustrates the international interest in the port. The value of the wider route also depends on the inland transport stages linking the waterfront with its intended markets.
