Miami port: a shared gateway for cruises and cargo
PortMiami combines a major cruise departure point with a working container gateway. Its passenger terminals and cargo facilities serve different markets, but both depend on access between the waterfront and the wider South Florida transport network. The harbour opens to the Atlantic through Government Cut.
Container traffic moves through terminals operated by companies including Seaboard Marine, South Florida Container Terminal and Port of Miami Terminal Operating Company. On-dock rail connects the cargo area with the inland freight network, while trucks link the quays with warehouses and distribution centres.
The port tunnel carries both cruise and cargo traffic between the port and the MacArthur Causeway, with access to I-395. This connection gives port traffic a route around downtown streets, linking the harbour’s passenger business and freight operations to the regional road system.
