Port of Freeport

Freeport is a container transhipment centre on Grand Bahama, positioned near major routes linking the Americas with Europe and Asia. Much of this business involves transferring containers between ships, allowing cargo to continue to another port without entering the island’s local market.

The container terminal has dedicated berths and stacking areas for organising these exchanges. It forms part of a broader harbour complex whose activities include vehicle and other wheeled cargo, passenger visits and ship repair. These functions use different facilities within the sheltered port.

Freeport’s role therefore extends beyond supplying its immediate surroundings. Container connections serve a wider shipping network, while the harbour’s industrial and passenger activities link maritime traffic with businesses and employment on the island.
