Port of Memphis
Memphis is an inland barge port serving industries along the Mississippi River. McKellar Lake and the adjoining Presidents Island industrial area form a substantial part of its working waterfront, connecting river transport with manufacturing, storage and distribution.
The wider port includes three sheltered harbour areas: McKellar Lake, Pidgeon Industrial Harbor and Wolf River Harbor. Terminals handle commodities such as grain, petroleum products, cement, steel, fertilisers and aggregates, with different waterfront sites supporting their own cargo and industrial activities.
Road and railway connections link these facilities with customers beyond the riverbank. Barges provide the waterborne leg of journeys through the Mississippi system, while land transport carries goods to and from the industrial parks. This combination makes Memphis a transfer and production centre within the inland freight network, with port activity closely tied to the businesses occupying its waterfront.
