Gijón: commercial shipping at El Musel and the urban harbour
Gijón’s port extends across the bay between Cabo de Torres and Cerro de Santa Catalina. The main commercial harbour at El Musel occupies the western side, while shipyards and the waterfront closer to the city form other distinct parts of the port area.
Bulk handling is a major function, with facilities for coal, iron ore, cement and other industrial commodities. Container and general cargo terminals broaden the traffic mix, and designated berths also accommodate cruise vessels and other passenger activity.
This layout combines a substantial industrial waterfront with a city that attracts maritime visitors. El Musel’s working terminals serve regional supply chains, while the older urban harbour provides a different setting closer to central Gijón.
