Freetown: container and conventional cargo on the estuary
Freetown’s commercial port occupies the sheltered Sierra Leone River estuary, with Queen Elizabeth II Quay forming a principal cargo waterfront. The quays around Fourah Point support container and conventional freight operations close to the city.
Freetown Terminal operates the container facility at Cline Town. Berths and landside handling areas provide the connection between shipping services and the movement of goods inland, while other parts of the commercial waterfront accommodate cargo requiring different handling arrangements.
Liquid-cargo infrastructure at Kissy lies separately farther east. This distribution of facilities gives the Freetown port area several distinct functions, with containerised goods, conventional freight and petroleum traffic using their respective terminal areas rather than a single interchangeable berth.
