Lisboa: cargo terminals and passenger activity across the Tagus
Lisboa combines cargo handling and passenger activity across the Tagus estuary. Its waterfront serves several distinct trades, with container terminals, foodstuff bulk facilities and liquid cargo installations forming a port system that extends beyond the city’s central quays.
Alcântara and Santa Apolónia are established container handling locations. Other facilities include multipurpose terminals at Beato and Poço do Bispo, foodstuff bulk terminals at Trafaria and Alhandra, and liquid cargo terminals serving industrial sites around the estuary. This spread of specialised facilities reflects the different storage and handling needs of each cargo.
Cruise facilities near the historic centre form another part of the port’s activity, alongside recreational docks. Commercial shipping and visiting passenger vessels therefore share the broader estuary while using waterfront areas designed for different purposes.
