Port of Kolkata
Kolkata’s dock system brings seaborne trade inland along the Hooghly River to the city’s commercial waterfront. Kidderpore Docks and Netaji Subhas Dock form its principal enclosed basins, with lock entrances separating their working waters from the tidal river.
The docks accommodate several cargo types. Netaji Subhas includes dedicated container facilities, while multipurpose berths handle goods requiring conventional quayside loading. Heavy cargo, liquid cargo and repair facilities add to the range of activities within the dock system.
Its position serves a broad inland market extending across eastern and northern regions, with trade connections also reaching Nepal and Bhutan. Containers link the river port with wider ocean shipping through connecting services, while conventional cargo uses the same inland maritime approach. This makes the Kolkata waterfront a distinct part of the port authority’s network, separate from the downstream Haldia complex.
