Port of Haldia

Haldia provides the lower-river cargo facilities of the Kolkata port system. Located on the Hooghly downstream of Kolkata, the dock complex handles a mixture of industrial raw materials, liquid cargo and manufactured goods. Coal, iron ore, fertilisers and petroleum products feature prominently in its berth specialisations.

The complex includes an enclosed dock basin and riverfront oil facilities. Cargo quays, storage plots and rail infrastructure support the transfer of bulk materials between ships and inland users, while other berths accommodate containers and general cargo.

Haldia’s role is closely connected with the surrounding industrial area and the wider eastern hinterland. Its river setting also shapes vessel access: channel maintenance, tides and changing river conditions influence shipping movements, so the port’s physical berth layout alone does not determine which vessels can enter.
