Port of Chania
Chania’s old Venetian harbour is a small-craft waterfront and historic centre closely connected with the town’s visitor economy. Its enclosed water, stone sea wall and lighthouse frame a harbour where maritime heritage and leisure activity share the same urban setting.
The eastern waterfront contains the marina and the surviving Venetian shipyards, known as the Neoria. The restored Grand Arsenal houses the Centre of Mediterranean Architecture, while the Moro Neorio is associated with the local sailing club. These buildings preserve the harbour’s shipbuilding history within its present-day waterfront.
Cafés, shops and accommodation line the promenade around the basin, linking boating activity with businesses ashore. The port’s distinctive role lies in this close relationship between small craft, historic maritime structures and the surrounding streets, with the harbour itself forming an integral part of the old town.
