Port of Calais

Calais is organised around short sea crossings that carry passengers, vehicles and freight across the Channel. Its ferry terminals connect maritime services with the road journeys of hauliers and travellers, making the transfer between land and sea central to the port’s daily role.

Roll-on/roll-off berths allow vehicles and trailers to move through ship ramps. Alongside the ferry operation, an intermodal terminal connects the port directly with the national railway network. Trailers can arrive by rail and continue aboard a ferry, joining two transport modes without unloading the goods inside.

Other harbour basins accommodate conventional commercial cargo and supporting maritime activity. This gives Calais a broader waterfront than the passenger terminals alone, although cross-Channel traffic remains its defining function. The combination of road access, railway handling and ferry berths supports freight journeys extending well beyond the coastal city.
