Folkestone: a former ferry harbour with a new waterfront role
Folkestone’s harbour has shifted from its former role in cross-Channel ferry traffic towards fishing, smaller craft and waterfront leisure. The old transport infrastructure remains visible, but the harbour arm now functions as a public promenade and a setting for food, events and cultural activity.
The tidal harbour retains a working maritime character, with fishing boats and recreational vessels using the waterfront. Areas that dry at low water distinguish it from a permanently deep commercial basin and shape the way the harbour is used.
Shops, food stalls and entertainment on the harbour arm draw visitors into the former ferry area. This reuse connects the town’s maritime past with a present-day economy based on smaller-scale harbour activity and tourism.
