Puntarenas: passenger shipping on the Gulf of Nicoya
Puntarenas has a strong passenger role on the Gulf of Nicoya, with cruise ships bringing visitors to the city’s waterfront. Its maritime layout reflects the narrow strip of land on which the town stands, separating the open gulf frontage from a sheltered estuary to the north.
The cruise pier extends out from the seafront and provides alongside berthing for passenger vessels. The harbour north of town is shallower and serves smaller craft, giving different parts of the waterfront distinct uses.
Although Puntarenas has a long history of overseas commerce, most regional cargo handling shifted to Puerto Caldera. Passenger arrivals remain important to the town, supporting excursions and waterfront businesses while preserving its connection with the wider gulf and the coastal communities around it.
