Caldera: Pacific cargo access for the Central Valley
Puerto Caldera is a Pacific cargo gateway for the Central Valley, linking overseas shipping with the commercial and industrial area around San José. Its traffic includes containers, general cargo and bulk commodities, with cereals and fertilisers forming important parts of the import trade. Agricultural exports travel in the opposite direction.
The harbour occupies the southern side of Caldera Bay. A breakwater shelters the cargo quays, while separate handling arrangements accommodate packaged goods and loose bulk cargo. This combination gives Caldera a broader freight role than a terminal devoted solely to containers.
Highway connections carry cargo between the coast and inland centres including Alajuela, Heredia, San José and Cartago. These links make the port an entry point for production inputs and consumer goods, as well as an outlet towards Pacific markets.
