Zhangjiagang: timber, bulk commodities and containers on the Yangtze
Zhangjiagang is a river port on the Yangtze with a broad cargo base serving the surrounding industrial economy. Timber, coal, ore, containers and general cargo are established parts of its trade, bringing both bulk carriers and container vessels to the waterfront.
Its terminals have different functions. The port group handles a varied commodity mix, while Yongjia Container Terminal provides container handling and storage, including facilities for refrigerated boxes. Barge connections extend its reach into the waterways of southern Jiangsu.
The wider port area also supports steelmaking supply chains: Haili Terminal receives iron ore and ships finished steel products. These industrial berths, together with public cargo terminals, explain Zhangjiagang’s importance as a meeting point between river transport, manufacturing and overseas trade.
