Westwood Shipping Lines began as a Pacific-Northwest carrier serving the trans-Pacific trade routes between North America and Northeast Asia. Its traditional services bridged ports on the U.S./Canadian West Coast and destinations in Japan, Korea, and China, carrying containerised, breakbulk, oversized and forest-product cargoes.
In April 2022, Westwood was acquired by Swire Shipping, as part of a strategic expansion into the North Pacific. As of February 1, 2024, the Westwood brand has been formally rebranded under the Swire Shipping name — although several of its vessels retain their distinctive “Westwood” names and green hulls, honoring the company’s legacy.
Throughout its history, Westwood stood out for a few distinguishing features:
- Multipurpose cargo handling — its geared “con-bulk” vessels were capable of accommodating containers, breakbulk, project cargo and bulk forest products on the same voyage. This versatility was particularly important for clients needing non-standard or mixed cargo shipments.
- Fixed schedules and reliability — even for challenging or mixed-cargo loads, Westwood offered regular liner services across the Pacific Northwest and Northeast Asia corridor, which helped industries depending on predictable supply flows.
- Intermodal and door-to-door logistics integration — beyond ocean transport, the company maintained rail and trucking connections to deliver cargo deep into North America, facilitating seamless logistics from origin port to inland delivery points.
The 2022 acquisition by Swire Shipping and the subsequent rebranding do not appear to have disrupted existing routes and service patterns — the same vessels and service schedules continue under the broader Swire Shipping liner network.
