Port Orford: a fishing port where boats come ashore
Port Orford’s working waterfront is built around an unusual way of handling fishing boats. Cranes lift vessels into and out of the sea, and boats are stored ashore on wheeled dollies or trailers between trips. This arrangement is known locally as a dolly dock.
The port provides direct access to the ocean without a river bar to cross. The launch and retrieval operation is therefore a central part of the fishing fleet’s routine, bringing boats, equipment and shoreside activity together on a compact working dock.
The cove provides shelter from north-westerly weather but is exposed to conditions from the south. Its physical setting helps explain why the harbour’s character differs from a marina with boats permanently afloat. Fishing and the businesses around it remain the defining focus of this waterfront.
