Port of New York
New York’s port is a harbour-wide network of marine terminals serving a large metropolitan market and inland freight routes. Container handling is spread across facilities in both New York and New Jersey, so its commercial reach extends well beyond the waterfront of a single city.
Ships entering from the Atlantic pass through a harbour divided into Lower Bay and Upper Bay by the Narrows. Branching waterways connect this shared approach with terminals around Staten Island, Bayonne, Newark and Elizabeth. The arrangement gives different waterfront districts access to the same ocean gateway.
ExpressRail links major container terminals with the national freight railway network. These connections allow goods to move between ships and inland distribution centres, complementing road transport and extending the port’s role beyond supplying the immediate urban area.
