Port of Buffalo
Buffalo’s harbour connects the eastern end of Lake Erie with Great Lakes shipping and the St Lawrence Seaway system. Bulk commodities are central to its maritime trade, with cargo facilities spread along the waterfront and into the river and canal system.
The wider port area’s cargo mix includes salt, grain, aggregates and industrial materials. Handling sites connect marine transport with rail, roads and storage, allowing loose commodities to be transferred directly or held before onward delivery. Commercial facilities extend south towards Lackawanna as well as around Buffalo itself.
Breakwaters protect the outer harbour, while dredged channels lead towards working waterfront areas. This combination of lake access, sheltered water and inland transport links supports the movement of raw materials and supplies for the region’s industrial and distribution businesses.
