Hamilton: industry and agriculture on Lake Ontario
Hamilton’s harbour connects steelmaking, agriculture and manufacturing with the Great Lakes shipping network. Cargoes reflect the city’s industrial base: iron ore and coal support steel production, while finished steel moves through the port for construction and automotive supply chains.
Grain terminals handle crops such as wheat, maize and soybeans, with fertiliser imports serving farms in the surrounding region. Other facilities accommodate petroleum products and large manufactured equipment, giving the waterfront a broader role than supplying the steel industry alone.
Storage areas and rail connections link marine terminals with inland producers and customers. This combination allows Hamilton to receive industrial inputs, consolidate agricultural exports and dispatch finished goods, using its position at the western end of Lake Ontario to connect regional businesses with waterborne trade.
