Port of Bristol

Bristol’s Floating Harbour preserves the layout of the city’s historic docks within a waterfront now closely associated with boating, culture and public life. Its water is maintained above the changing tidal level, allowing vessels to remain afloat within the enclosed harbour.

Former cargo quays and dockside spaces now sit alongside museums, visitor attractions and places to eat and gather. Moorings and facilities for recreational boats keep the water in active use, maintaining a maritime presence within the city centre.

The harbour’s role has changed as large-scale commercial shipping developed farther down the Avon at Avonmouth and Royal Portbury. Today, the central docks connect Bristol’s trading history with leisure activity, giving the old working waterfront a continuing place in the city’s everyday life.
