Port of Coega
Coega’s maritime gateway is the Port of Ngqura, at the mouth of the Coega River in Algoa Bay. Its container terminal serves both cargo moving to or from inland markets and transhipment traffic, where containers are transferred between ships for onward journeys.
The terminal began operating in 2009 and forms part of the port system serving the Eastern Cape. Its location beside the Coega Special Economic Zone places maritime cargo handling close to an extensive industrial development area.
This combination gives Ngqura a role in regional manufacturing and international shipping networks. Road access connects the port with the surrounding economy, while the container terminal provides the ship-to-ship transfer function that distinguishes it from a port serving only its immediate hinterland.
