Bosaso: livestock trade and a Gulf of Aden harbour
Bosaso connects Puntland’s economy with markets across the Gulf of Aden. Livestock exports have been central to the port’s development, linking pastoral producers with buyers on the Arabian Peninsula and giving the waterfront a role beyond the city itself.
Breakwaters enclose the harbour basin, reached through a channel across the coastal reef. The main quay and smaller inner berths provide different working areas within a relatively compact port layout, with anchorage waters outside the entrance.
Plans to expand cargo handling have included quay rehabilitation and new container and cargo-unpacking yards. These developments reflect an effort to broaden the port’s trade alongside its established livestock business; proposed capacity and anticipated shipping links should be distinguished from the facilities already in use.
