Kyaukpyu: coastal harbour and a wider port development area
Kyaukpyu’s town harbour is part of a wider maritime area that also contains energy infrastructure and proposals for a deep-sea port. The coastal port and its anchorage should be distinguished from the separate facilities around Made Island.
The port authority’s harbour information describes a waterfront jetty for smaller vessels and an anchorage accommodating larger ships. This difference between alongside and anchorage facilities is important to understanding the existing harbour, whose scale differs from the major terminal projects associated with the Kyaukpyu name.
Made Island’s oil terminal forms a separate part of the area’s maritime infrastructure. Plans for the special economic zone’s deep-sea port concern a further development, and their proposed container capacity does not describe the town harbour’s existing facilities.
