Salina Cruz: petroleum traffic at the Pacific end of the isthmus
Salina Cruz combines petroleum distribution with commercial cargo handling on the Gulf of Tehuantepec. Its position at the Pacific end of the isthmus gives it a role in both coastal fuel movements and freight connections across the narrow land corridor.
The port has distinct areas for commercial cargo, fishing and petroleum operations. Its commercial facilities accommodate containers, agricultural and mineral bulk cargoes, and general cargo, including oversized equipment. Rail tracks and warehouses form part of the cargo infrastructure, while PEMEX’s maritime terminal serves the movement of petroleum products.
Rail and road connections link Salina Cruz with Coatzacoalcos on the opposite side of the isthmus. Alongside that cross-isthmus role, the port supports regional imports and exports and the distribution of fuel to other Pacific coast ports.
