Macau: passenger ferries and a working inner harbour
Macau’s maritime activity is divided between distinct waterfronts around the peninsula. The Outer Harbour provides a passenger gateway, while the Inner Harbour on the western side has a longstanding connection with cargo movements, river transport and fishing craft.
The outer port is protected by breakwaters, and separate approach channels serve the different harbour areas. Ferry terminals bring travellers into the city, while cargo quays support smaller commercial vessels. Facilities elsewhere in the wider port system, including Taipa and Ka Ho, serve separate locations.
This division reflects the city’s combination of visitor traffic and everyday supply needs. Passenger shipping supports travel and tourism, while the working inner waterfront maintains a link with regional waterborne trade. Macau’s port is therefore best understood as several connected maritime areas with different functions.
