Port of Tobruk

Tobruk’s commercial port occupies the north-western side of a natural bay, providing a sheltered setting for maritime trade. The bay extends inland and separates the commercial waterfront from the oil-handling berths on its south-eastern side.

The Libyan Ports Company identifies general cargo, dry bulk and containerised goods among the port’s cargo categories. These require different handling arrangements, with the commercial quays serving a broader mix of freight than the specialised liquid cargo facilities elsewhere in the bay.

That division is important when identifying a destination in the Tobruk area. A shipment for the commercial port and a tanker movement to the oil waterfront concern different facilities, even though both use the same harbour setting. The bay’s layout is therefore central to understanding the port’s working geography.
