Niigata: island ferries and international cargo in separate harbour districts
Niigata’s port is divided between a river-mouth harbour and a separate eastern district. The western harbour, at the mouth of the Shinano River, combines passenger facilities with working quays close to the city. The eastern district contains the international container terminal, giving the wider port both passenger and overseas freight roles.
Breakwaters protect the entrances to the two harbour areas. Ferry facilities in the western district include the terminal for crossings to Sado Island, while the eastern port’s cargo infrastructure is located farther from the city centre.
These separate locations matter to the port’s users: ferry passengers and container traffic approach different facilities through the local road network. Together, the districts link the surrounding region with island travel, domestic sea transport and international shipping across the Sea of Japan.
