Port of Nagasaki
Nagasaki’s harbour combines an industrial waterfront with a cruise arrival point close to the city centre. Mountains surround much of the inlet, while its inner and outer harbour areas accommodate different parts of a maritime economy shaped by overseas trade and shipbuilding.
Matsugae Wharf serves cruise vessels, with a passenger terminal and border-processing facilities near the urban waterfront. Elsewhere, Kogakura Yanagi has quays for containers and conventional cargo, while other berths handle aggregates and materials used by industry. These working areas give the harbour a broader role than its passenger facilities alone suggest.
For visitors, the central quays provide access to the city’s historic trading districts and tram network. For cargo owners, the separate commercial terminals connect maritime transport with local businesses, maintaining a working port alongside the waterfront’s visitor economy.
