Aburatsu port: cargo and cruise ships share a gateway
Aburatsu combines a working cargo harbour with a role in cruise tourism. The opening of Higashi Wharf in 1998 expanded its ability to accommodate container ships and roll-on/roll-off vessels, which carry wheeled cargo driven on and off the ship. That development added to the port’s freight-handling role alongside its passenger traffic.
The port connects businesses in southern Miyazaki with maritime markets elsewhere in Asia. Its natural harbour has been developed with breakwaters and berthing facilities, supporting the movement of cargo as well as visits by large passenger ships.
For cruise passengers, the appeal lies beyond the quays. Official visitor information highlights the historic streets of Obi, the Aburatsu shopping arcade and local bonito dishes. These attractions help explain the port’s prominence in cruise searches, while its container and vehicle-carrying facilities remain an important part of its commercial identity.
