Acre port: a waterfront shaped by trade
Acre’s waterfront tells the story of a port whose commercial influence helped shape the city around it. During the Crusader period, maritime trade gave the town an international role, while the sea and defensive walls constrained its growth. The result was a densely built port city with trade woven into its streets and buildings.
That history remains visible in layers. Ottoman walls, markets and public buildings stand above and alongside surviving medieval structures. UNESCO recognises the old city for this unusual combination of periods.
For visitors, the harbour provides a way to understand that wider setting. Its significance lies in the relationship between seaborne trade, fortification and urban life, with the waterfront forming part of a much larger historic landscape.
