Tela: fuel imports through a Caribbean roadstead
Tela is a small maritime outlet on its namesake Caribbean bay, with fuel imports forming an identifiable part of its commercial role. It belongs to the network of ports administered by Empresa Nacional Portuaria and sits on an open roadstead rather than within a large enclosed dock basin.
The central bank’s report for 2025 records approximately 3.35 million barrels of imported fuel entering through Tela’s customs office. This represented 11.6 per cent of the national fuel import volume reported for that year, indicating a material contribution to the domestic supply chain.
These petroleum movements provide a more useful description of its recent trade than a general container-port label. Tela’s coastal setting and specialised import function should be considered separately from the larger cargo operations at Puerto Cortés.
