Banjul: an estuary gateway for maritime trade
Banjul’s port occupies the western entrance to the River Gambia, where the city meets the estuary. The harbour gives seagoing vessels access to a concentrated commercial waterfront that serves as a gateway for goods moving into and out of the country.
Its cargo facilities accommodate containers and non-containerised shipments. Berthing, loading and discharge are supported by cargo handling equipment, allowing goods arriving in different forms to pass between ships and the port’s landside operations.
The estuary setting is an important part of this role: the port links Atlantic shipping with the capital’s commercial activity at the mouth of a major river. Its function centres on receiving and dispatching cargo, supporting the businesses and distribution networks that depend on maritime trade through Banjul.
