Port of Marseille
Marseille’s eastern harbour basins bring ferry services, cruise calls and commercial cargo handling into the city’s waterfront. Protected by breakwaters, these basins form the urban part of the wider Marseille Fos port system and have a different mix of activities from its western industrial sites.
Ferry links serve Mediterranean destinations, including Corsica and North Africa. Cargo facilities handle wheeled freight, conventional goods and selected bulk commodities, while ship repair adds another working use to the harbour estate. Passenger traffic and commercial shipping therefore share the broader waterfront through separate facilities.
The distinction between Marseille and Fos matters when describing the port. The major industrial basins farther west belong to the same organisation, but their refineries and large container facilities are separate from the city harbour shown here.
