Punta Arenas: terminals on the Strait of Magellan
Punta Arenas supports cargo, fishing and passenger activity along the Strait of Magellan. Its port infrastructure is spread along the waterfront, with the Arturo Prat and José de los Santos Mardones terminals serving different parts of this maritime business.
Arturo Prat has a projecting pier and a passenger hall close to the city waterfront. Farther north, the Mardones terminal at Bahía Catalina handles container and fishing-related activity and can receive cruise ships when circumstances require an alternative to Prat.
This arrangement combines urban passenger facilities with a separate commercial terminal. The quays face the strait rather than a fully enclosed dock system, and the exposed coastal setting remains an important feature of port operations in the area.
