Iquique: commercial terminals behind the breakwater
Iquique’s harbour brings together commercial cargo handling and maritime activity associated with the city’s coastal economy. The port developed around the former Serrano Island, joined to the mainland, with breakwaters providing shelter for its working quays.
Its two principal terminal areas have different operating arrangements: the Espigón terminal is operated by Iquique Terminal Internacional, while the Molo terminal uses a multi-operator system managed by the port company. This division provides separate working areas within the same harbour.
Cargo facilities coexist with fishing-related activity and cruise calls. The port’s layout also includes specialised handling for commodities such as mineral concentrates and liquids, reflecting the different demands placed on storage, vessel berthing and the transfer of goods between sea and shore.
