Port of Port Hedland

Port Hedland is an ore-shipping port closely tied to the Pilbara’s mineral industry. Iron ore dominates its exports, with salt and lithium-bearing mineral cargoes adding to the mix. The waterfront is part of a supply chain that moves large volumes of raw materials from inland production areas to overseas customers.

Bulk-loading facilities occupy the harbour, reached through a marked approach channel from offshore waters. This geography concentrates ship movements along a defined route between the sea and the working berths. The port’s infrastructure is shaped by the requirements of bulk carriers and mineral handling.

Its economic role is strongly outward-facing: the port provides the maritime outlet for resources produced across the region. The variety of exported minerals also links it with several industrial markets beyond iron and steel production.
