TOTE Maritime consists of two main regional carriers — one serving Alaska and the other serving Puerto Rico — operating under the umbrella of the U.S.-based Saltchuk group. The company’s roots go back to 1975, when it started as Totem Ocean Trailer Express and launched its first voyage from Seattle to Anchorage.

For decades, TOTE Maritime Alaska has provided vital Ro/Ro and container services linking the North American mainland with remote Alaskan ports — a lifeline for supplies, goods and equipment to communities beyond the road network. In parallel, TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico has operated dedicated lift-on/ lift-off container services since 1985, sustaining trade between the continental United States and Puerto Rico, as well as other Caribbean destinations.

What stands out about TOTE is its early commitment to more sustainable shipping practices. In 2015, the company introduced the world’s first LNG-powered containerships — the “Marlin-class” vessels — to serve the Puerto Rico route, underscoring a forward-looking approach to lowering emissions.More recently, its Alaska-bound Orca-class ships have been converted to LNG power, signaling ongoing efforts to modernize and green its fleet.

TOTE’s operations cover a broad range of cargo types: from dry goods and refrigerated freight to oversized cargo, vehicles, hazardous materials, and other non-standard loads.
