Mariupol: the established industrial cargo role of an Azov port
Mariupol developed as an industrial cargo port on Taganrog Bay in the Sea of Azov, serving the Donbas hinterland. Its historical role centred on moving industrial freight between inland transport networks and seagoing vessels, with coal handling among its established activities.
Before the invasion, the port’s infrastructure included facilities for bulk cargo, containers and heavy or oversized loads, together with covered warehouses and open storage. Railway and road connections supported cargo transfer at the waterfront. These features describe the port’s established commercial structure rather than a statement of present availability.
The port has been officially closed by the Ukrainian authorities since April 2022. Its former cargo profile should therefore be read in that security context, without assuming normal commercial access or the availability of its previous services.
