Tanga: a northern gateway for commercial cargo
Tanga serves the commercial and agricultural economy of the northern coastal region. Its harbour combines cargo berths and storage areas with access to inland roads, including the coastal connection towards Dar es Salaam.
The port’s modernised facilities include alongside berths, mobile harbour cranes and container-handling equipment. Storage yards and a vehicle holding area complement the quay operations, while separate oil infrastructure at Raskazone serves liquid cargo. This is a broader arrangement than the older harbour’s heavy reliance on lighterage.
The port retains both inner and outer harbour waters within Tanga Bay. Cargo handling, storage and onward transport support regional supply chains, while the separate crude-oil development at Chongoleani represents another project in the wider area rather than an existing function of every Tanga berth.
